June 17- Jason Jorg

We made it to the Mission of Hope campus today after landing in Port-Au-Prince at around 9:30am local time (Eastern). Yesterday we ended up getting through security in Tucson almost successfully. I guess there were some drill bits in the water filters that were packaged up in one of the carry on suitcases. So we had to go back and check it. We flew to Miami, Florida to stay over night. We finally made it there after having to wait in the airplane on the tarmac for an extra hour before taking off and then having to fly in a bunch of circles on the west coast of Florida because of the rainy weather in Miami. We got to our hotel at about 5:30pm. For dinner we all went down stairs to the hotel restaurant which had a variety of salads, sandwiches, soups, and appetizers which could also easily accomadate for the gluten allergies that some of the team members have. I got a 12 hour smoked briskit sandwich and fries which was amazing. Despite some of the earlier requests to go to the beach, we decided to just go to pool because it was getting too late. It was almost like a hot tub... probably in the low 90's, which was kind of nice until we really started moving around when we played Keep Away with the frisbee for a little bit. After the pool, we went back to our rooms to go to bed. I was obviously not ready to wake up when I slept through my noisy alarm at 4:00am and Nathan had to wake me up. We had a safe flight to Port-Au-Prince and a safe but crazy drive to the campus. There are no traffic rules and you pretty much just go for it and don't crash. And we didn't! We unloaded, ate lunch (beans and rice with a hint of crab), and settled into our rooms. We are currently playing spike ball and hanging out as we wait for dinner at 6:00. We also met a couple goats on the beach which Holly named Larry and Pebble. So far it has been a great start to the trip with a great group of people and I can't wait for all of the great moments and memories to come. I just realized I put a lot of 'greats' in my last sentence. Oh well!

  1. A hint of crab in the beans, huh? Did all the food and wish list stuff make it ok? No peanut butter explosions in the suitcases? I'm so full of questions.
